Our remediation and risk management solutions helped to deliver this complex remediation project within the agreed budget, allowing the previous land owner to meet their contractual obligations to the new landowner and for the new landowner to meet their obligations under the Contaminated Land Management Act.


We were engaged by Foster’s in 2006 to provide remediation and risk management solutions for contaminated soil and groundwater.

The site in questions was close to two hectares in size and was part of a large industrial property located on the banks of the Parramatta River in Sydney. The site had previously been reclaimed from a tidal mangrove zone using poor quality fill material. Following this, it was used for industrial purposes that included the cleaning of chemical storage drums.

The industrial property was owned by Southcorp Wines for nearly 50 years where they operated a water heater manufacturing business. In 2003, Southcorp sold the land and their operations on the site to a leading global manufacturer. 

During the sale process, the NSW EPA declared the site as posing a significant risk of harm to human health and the environment. Southcorp were required to remediate the identified land contamination as part of the agreement.

Soon after the completion of the sale, Southcorp, including their contamination related liabilities, were acquired by Foster’s.  


Based on the findings of our site investigations, we identified the source of groundwater contamination and that it originated from residual contamination in the soil matrix. To effectively remediate this, we determined that only the  impacted soil needed to be remediated and by doing so, we were able to avoid treating the groundwater. Avoiding this step was a significant advantage as it allowed the project to be effectively closed out, reduced the risk of remediation cost and time escalation, and provided a higher level of certainty of achieving the remediation goals. It also meant that we could complete the project within the allocated budget. 

The most important technical question in developing the remediation solution was how to remediate soil that was acting as the source for groundwater contamination. In order to develop a cost effective on-site method that reduced off-site landfill disposal of impacted soil, we designed and performed bench scale and pilot scale treatability trials. Based on the results of these trials, exsitu bioremediation was selected as the preferred method of soil remediation.

In conjunction with the project control group, we also implemented a series of risk management workshops. Through this, a project risk matrix and a risk management framework were developed. The focus of the risk management framework was to allocate each identified risk to the party best positioned to manage it whilst delivering the end outcome.  


Through our services, we ensured the current and previous landowners of the contaminated site met their regulatory and contractual obligations. 

Our remediation solution provided certainty that the project goals would be achieved and the project would be completed within the allocated budget.
