Last week the NZ Transport Agency, KiwiRail and the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery alliance (NCTIR) took home the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) People’s Choice Award.
This Award, decided by public vote, recognises the world’s top civil engineering project of the year and reflects what the people who benefit from the civil engineering efforts really think.
The Kaikōura earthquake recovery project took out top honours after competing against a number of outstanding engineering projects from across the globe including The Tate Museum in St Ives, England; the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, India; and The Forth Bridge Replacement Crossing, Scotland.

The devasting earthquake in November 2016 caused extensive damage leaving communities stranded by slips, critical infrastructure and rail and road network severely damaged, including State Highway 1 (SH1) and the Main North Rail Line between Picton and Christchurch, which both had to be closed.
The North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) alliance was set up to rebuild the SH1 and rail network north and south of Kaikōura. The alliance included the NZ Transport Agency, Kiwirail, Downer, Fulton Hogan, HEB and Higgins.
Coffey was seconded to NCTIR and provided specialist services for geotechnical and seismic design of new seawalls, bridge foundations, abutments, cut slopes and mechanically stabilized earth walls (MSEW). Our team also provided construction monitoring for safety during slip stabilisation and design verification. We delivered state of the art detailed geotechnical design for new structures that was both innovative and helped reduce material costs and construction time.
